“Why can’t I?” I asked my boss one too many times, and he was frustrated. He walked away so he wouldn’t yell at me. Then he came back in, about to tell me why I couldn’t. Instead, he just stood there, unable to answer my question. Finally, he said, “Ok. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.” He was referring to the area of town that another manager sold insurance policies in just six months ago. He was convinced there was no new business to be had, so I’d be wasting my time. But I BELIEVED I could.
Did you ever ask why can’t you do something? Even if you already knew why you couldn’t, or why you shouldn’t? I have. And that’s ok for most things. For this post, I’m focusing on the things that are STILL POSSIBLE.
Thomas Edison didn’t ask why he couldn’t make a light bulb after failing so many times. Instead, he focused on the “why not”. He focused on why he couldn’t get the light bulb to work. And by asking THAT question, he solved it! What do you need to ask the “why not” about? We need more people to say it CAN be done, and fewer to say it’s impossible. Ask the question, “Why can’t I?” Find out the why nots, and conquer them!
To let you know the ending of my story from earlier, I believed I could sell policies in that area, despite the gloomy picture that was painted for me. And I did! It was a record week for the Company, which frankly blew my manager’s mind. I was so happy for my accomplishment. Find out your “why cant’s”, and then go out and conquer them!
